Here, I’m going to present the most relevant definitions in English and in Spanish of the aspect of translation that I have talked to you about. If you are interested know more about it, see the links.

Borrowing: it means to take/borrow a word or even a phrase from one language for using in another language (McArthur T., 1992).

Préstamo: significa tomar/tomar prestada una palabra o incluso una frase de un idioma para usarla en otro idioma. (McArthur T., 1992)

Calque: it is a word or phrase borrowed from another language and translated word-for-word. It is also called loan translation. For example: (OneHourTranslation, 2008-2019). 

Calco: es una palabra o frase tomada prestada de otro idioma y traducida palabra por palabra. También se la conoce como traducción de préstamos. Por ejemplo: “Beer garden” es un calco del alemán “Biergarten”.

Literal translation: it is a translation technique in which word by word is translated.

Traducción literal: es una técnica de traducción en la que se traduce palabra por palabra.

Oblique translation: it is a term that refers to free translation where the translator exercises his/her freedom to obtain equivalence (Grassilli, 2016).

Traducción oblicua: es un término que se refiere a la traducción libre en la que el traductor ejerce su libertad para obtener la equivalencia. (Grassilli, 2016)

Transposition: it is the replacement or change of a word class by another class without changing the meaning, and it operates at the grammatical level (Grassilli, 2016).

Transposición: es la sustitución o cambio de una clase de palabras por otra clase sin cambiar el significado, y funciona a nivel gramatical. (Grassilli, 2016)

Modulation: it is a technique in which a different phrase is used in the original text and in the translated text to convey the same idea.

Modulación: es una técnica en la que se utiliza una frase diferente en el texto original y en el texto traducido para transmitir la misma idea.

Adaptation: it occurs when there is a shift in the cultural environment, i.e. when the cultural referent is changed because it does not exist in another language culture (Bosco G., 2019).

Adaptación: ocurre cuando existe un cambio en el entorno cultural, es decir, cuando se cambia al referente cultural ya que no existe en otra cultura lingüística. (Bosco, 2019)

Equivalence: it is a translation method that is used when you have to express something in a completely different way, for example, equivalence is useful in translating idioms.

Equivalencia: es un método de traducción que se utiliza cuando tienes que expresar algo de una manera completamente diferente, por ejemplo, la equivalencia es útil para traducir expresiones idiomáticas.

Faithful translation: it is a technique in which the translator must be faithful to the text, the author, and the author’s intention.

Traducción fiel: es una técnica en la que el traductor debe ser fiel al texto, al autor, y a la intención del autor.

Idiomatic translation: it is a translation that conveys the meaning of the original text, through equivalences, form and structures of the target language, in order to produce a translation that is read as an original.

Traducción idiomática: es una traducción que transmite el significado del texto original, mediante equivalencias, forma y estructuras de la lengua meta, con el fin de producir una traducción que se lee como un original.

Direct translation: This technique is used when structural and conceptual elements of the source language can be transposed into the target language (Grassilli, 2016).

Traducción directa: Esta técnica se utiliza cuando los elementos estructurales y conceptuales del idioma de origen pueden transponerse al idioma de destino. (Grassilli, 2016)

Free translation: this is a method in which the translator analyzes the meaning of the entire sentence and translates it into their language as a native speaker would say; the translator can modify the structure of the text to make the translation sound better.

Traducción libre: este es un método en el que el traductor analiza el sentido de toda la frase y lo traduce en su idioma como un nativo hablante lo diría; el traductor puede modificar la estructura del texto para que la traducción suene mejor.
